Sometimes it pays to keep your cards close to your chest while you are honing your sound; compressing, sawing, stretching and tearing your noises into a shape to create exactly what you are after; something dangerous and PVC taut. The Officers are delighted to cruelly unleash this on you with their debut single, ‘Red Chapter’ on 19th January on Propaganda Records via PIAS.

Well supported in the underground catacombs of music, followers of their dank sound include The Music (who have taken the pack on tour twice), Alan McGee, Infadels and uber-producers Jagz Kooner (Reverend & the Makers, Primal Scream) and Atticus Ross (Nine Inch Nails). DJ Eddy Temple-Morris has been particularly vocal, and dubbed their demo the best of last year which made them his favourite new band, “by a f*cking country mile”.

Likened to other low-down and dirty soundmakers like NiN, Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy, The Officers create a dagger tight sound which is begging to be ripped open. With sharp electro bass lines, skuzzy guitar hooks and frontman Matt’s guttural drawls, The Officers unmissable anarchic power is going from strength to strength in its ascent. ‘Red Chapter’ is one of the darkest tracks, nearly crossing the electro-rock boundary into full blown apocalypse. It was recorded with longtime Radiohead producer and engineer Graeme Stewart. ‘Soul Saviour’s punishing rhythm is filthy and compulsive in its styling, pulling you towards the nearest club bass amp. The ‘Red Chapter’ remix from Dean Tidey vs Player Player makes sure you’re in the queue at the smutty door.

The single has already picked up, ‘Single of the Day’ on Q music website, and ‘Single of the Week’ on the Q Radio QPM show. Add to this the New Music Exposure pieces in Rocksound and highly rated single reviews in The Fly, iDJ and Mixmag and Artrocker it has been a very healthy start!

The Officers are one of the most exciting live acts you will see. As well as The Music they’ve also toured with Reverend and the Makers, Placebo, A Place To Bury Strangers, Goose, The Cooper Temple Clause. The Officers have been uprooting clubs and venues in their Northern homeland, leading to gigs on the edge of near-riot as sweat drips from the ceiling.

The combination of their violent precision and pumping bass lines begs the question of where else you could possibly be come gig night.

The Officers are Matt Southall (vocals/ programming), Jamie Baker (guitar), Kieran Wherrett (guitar), Stu Drinkall (synths) and Matt Lunn (drums).

“A cataclysmic slice of sexual tension, driving electronic pulses and beautifully powered vocals.” MUSIC WEEK
